Change stalls in the middle. Almost no one studies it there.

I help leaders find where their change is stuck, using research most consultants never read: an index of 35,000 management journal articles, built to look at the layer everyone else skips.

Each dot is one research abstract: 853 about executives, 68 about middle managers, in 22 management and organization development journals, 2007 to 2018.

Every dot is one paper. The gap narrows a little, and never closes.

Keyword counts of research and review abstracts in the Unfrozen Research Index, built from OpenAlex. 2026 is year to date. For 2007 to 2018 the index finds 786 to 66, close to the 853 to 68 in the doctoral research file above: two databases, built separately, give nearly the same answer.

The Unfrozen Loop: five things the middle needs for a change to hold.

Each part is sized by how many of 117 middle-manager studies inform it. Pick a part.

Evidence map of 117 middle-manager studies, 2007 to 2018, from the Unfrozen Research Index. A study can inform more than one part. Coding is exploratory and AI-assisted, pending human verification.

Find the weak part, then teach your managers to find it themselves.

Who you'd work with

I spent eight years in the U.S. Army, where after-action reviews and commander's intent are how work gets done. I did my doctoral coursework in organization development at Benedictine University, and I write Unfrozen, a newsletter on how change actually moves through organizations.

I built the Unfrozen Research Index because I wanted to know what the research really says about the middle. Mostly, it says very little. That's the gap I work in.
